If you’ve looked into weight loss injectables, you’ve probably seen both Ozempic and Wegovy recommended. And while they contain the same active ingredient—semaglutide—they’re not exactly the same.
Let’s break down the key differences, how each is used, and how SmartCare RX helps patients access them affordably.
What Is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It helps lower blood sugar, reduce appetite, slow digestion, and support sustained weight loss. It was originally approved for type 2 diabetes, but it’s now widely prescribed for weight loss and metabolic health.
Ozempic vs. Wegovy: What’s the Difference?
Which One Is Right for You?
That depends on:
- Your health history (diabetes, insulin resistance, etc.)
- Your provider’s guidance
- Your insurance plan or out-of-pocket cost
- Your weight loss goals and support plan
Note: Many providers prescribe Ozempic off-label for weight loss if Wegovy is denied by insurance.
What About Zepbound or Mounjaro?
These are other GLP-1 or dual agonists (GLP-1 + GIP) with similar benefits:
- Mounjaro is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes (tirzepatide)
- Zepbound is FDA-approved for weight loss
- Both are newer and may be covered by select plans
We’ll soon cover this in its own blog post. Stay tuned!
